#85 – Naked on Facebook

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on April 29, 2011 by scotthiga

On Easter I had the chance to speak with my uncle who lives in North Carolina. We were doing a bit of catching up when he told me that he follows along with my life on Facebook. I was taken aback when he said that because I realized he knew much more about my life than I thought he did.

Even though I was still wearing my Easter suit, I felt a little naked.

#84 – Useless Knowledge

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on April 28, 2011 by scotthiga

Nerds are known for their encyclopedic knowledge of useless information.

For instance, I can identify almost any Star Trek: The Next Generation episode by name within 30 seconds. I’m a little worse with seasons one, six and seven, but I pretty much bat a thousand with seasons two through five. That’s pretty much useless knowledge, though. It doesn’t add value to my life and it doesn’t impress my wife.

Unfortunately, a lot of the knowledge that Christians have about God and the Bible ends up being just as useless.  Read more »

#83 – Resurrecting Nerdclinations

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on April 27, 2011 by scotthiga

I love Easter because it celebrates Jesus’ triumph over death and darkness. The power of God resurrected Jesus and now that same power gives me new life and the ability to live out that new life. Sometimes, though, I wish I could transfer that power and bring some of my favorite nerdclinations back to life. Read more »

#82 – Introverted in the Church

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on April 26, 2011 by scotthiga

At our church’s Easter services, our pastor invited anyone who had questions about Christianity to join him for coffee on Monday afternoon. I joined him to observe and get everyone’s drinks while the questions were asked. Sitting in that environment, I marveled at my pastor’s ability to engage with people he hardly knew. He was compassionate, caring, sensitive and not the least bit nervous.

Had I been in my pastor’s position I would have wanted to run away.  Read more »

#81 – Zombie Jesus

Posted in Uncategorized on April 25, 2011 by scotthiga

We just finished celebrating the resurrection of our risen Lord. Easter commemorates the most significant day in the history of the universe. Jesus Christ died to cleanse us of our sins and gave us new life through his resurrection. Some people, though, suggest that Jesus is nothing more than a zombie.

Normally, when something dies and comes back to life, we think it belongs in Zombieland more than a children’s Sunday school class. When people start thinking about Zombie Jesus they’ll ask me what I think. I don’t think Jesus was a zombie; here are some reasons why.  Read more »

#80 – Good Friday vs. The Empire Strikes Back

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on April 22, 2011 by scotthiga

Today is Good Friday. The day Christians reflect upon Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. It’s an important holiday but ultimately fairly depressing.

Really, Good Friday is The Empire Strikes Back of holidays. Both are a little depressing and both leave you wondering if things are going to turn out all right.

To compare the two, let’s check out the tale of the tape. Read more »

#79 – Censored Sunday School Lessons

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on April 21, 2011 by scotthiga

I grew up going to church and spent most every Sunday morning in Sunday school. There is a solid rotation of Bible stories for every Sunday school program. I cannot count the number of times I heard the story of Jonah or saw a flannelgraph presentation of the feeding of the 5,000. Stories with miracles or animals made the best Sunday school lessons.

A number of those lessons were often censored. Below are some of the censored stories and what was left out.  Read more »

#78 – Nerdy Church Buildings

George Lucas is building a new home for the Singapore-based LucasFilm Animation. Below is an artist’s rendering of what that building will look like.

#77 – Bible Reading

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on April 19, 2011 by scotthiga

I jumped on the nerd bandwagon and started reading A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. A Game of Thrones is the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series which is now a television series on HBO. My interest was piqued when I started hearing about the show and I finally got the book and began reading it. I started reading the 800-page book less than a week ago and I’m already through 550 pages. Reading fiction is easy and it goes so quickly.

If the Bible was fiction I wonder if I’d have an easier time reading it.  Read more »

#76 – Scary Movies

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on April 18, 2011 by scotthiga

I don’t watch scary movies because they scare me, fill my head with disturbing images, give me nightmares and keep me from sleeping. I’m kind of a scaredy-cat, something to which I readily admit, so I have no trouble avoiding scary movies.

As Christians, though, is that a stance we should take? Should Christians avoid scary movies?  Read more »
