#119 – Missing Jesus

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 16, 2011 by scotthiga

As I write this my wife is playing Little Big Planet of her own accord. She’s awesome and has definitely spent more time with a controller in her hand this week than I have. I haven’t played video games much this week because my friend accidentally took my copy of Dragon Age: Origins 2 and I wasn’t able to get it back for a few days.

Needless to say I was crushed.

I missed having my video game for a few days but when I miss spending time with Jesus for a few days, I don’t really miss it.

Needless to say, when I came to that realization, I was crushed.  Read more »

#118 – Superman is Lame

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 15, 2011 by scotthiga

Yesterday I spent the day at Six Flags Magic Mountain with our student ministry. It was a great day of hanging out with students, talking while waiting and riding roller coasters. One ride I didn’t make it on was Superman: Escape from Krypton. Even though I didn’t make it on the ride, I saw Superman paraphernalia and souvenirs all over the park.

Constantly seeing the Superman logo reminded me that Superman is totally lame.

Superman isn’t one of my favored nerdclinations. My interaction with Superman is limited to the movies, the first season of Smallville and a couple comics here and there. I would say that I have the same knowledge of Superman as the average person. And, armed with that knowledge, I have come to the conclusion that Superman is lame. Here are some reasons why.  Read more »

#117 – Review: Super 8

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 14, 2011 by scotthiga

This past weekend I saw J.J. Abrams’ new movie Super 8. I never watched Lost or Alias. My only real connection with Abrams is Star Trek, which I loved. I was excited for Super 8 since I saw the first trailers and got more excited as I realized it was an homage to Spielberg classics like E.T. and Close Encounters of a Third Kind. I actually only saw E.T. once when I was seven and thought it was boring; I didn’t feel the same way about Super 8.

I thought Super 8 was thoroughly entertaining and really enjoyed the relationships among the kids in the movie. There is definitely a lot of action in the movie, but it’s the relationships that are the strength of the movie. This isn’t really a review of Super 8 but just some thoughts on the movie from a Christian perspective. As always I’ll do my best to keep things spoiler-free but I loved when Kirk and Spock beamed in to save the day.  Read more »

#116 – The NBA Finals for Nerds

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on June 13, 2011 by scotthiga

Popular sporting events can always cause trouble for nerds. The day after the Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat for the NBA Championship, nerds could find themselves at a loss in conversations about LeBron James, Dirk Nowitzki or the Larry O’Brien Trophy. To help nerds better understand the 2011 NBA Finals, here is a nerdy analysis. Read more »

#115 – E3

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 10, 2011 by scotthiga

E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, took place in Los Angeles this week. E3 is a trade show mainly focused on the video game industry. I was able to go to E3 a couple times and, as I saw all the highlights of the show, I wanted to be there again.

When I think about E3, though, my fondness isn’t just for the show but for that period of my life. I first went to E3 in 2002 – nine years ago. A lot has happened in my life in nine years. I graduated from college, I graduated from seminary, I began my career as a pastor and I married my amazing wife. Even though I like my life now, it’s hard not to remember all the good times I had nine years ago.

I was young, in college and living life with very few responsibilities. Read more »

#114 – Golf and Pastors

Posted in Uncategorized on June 9, 2011 by scotthiga

Today is our church’s annual golf tournament. The tournament raises funds to help send students to camp. Today also marks my annual round of golf.

I’m a pastor but I’m not very good at golf, which might make me a bad pastor.

My senior pastor is very good at golf. He’s been golfing for a couple decades and his dedication has paid off. When he swings the club the ball goes where he wants it to go. When I swing the club, I very often miss the ball.

I don’t know why pastors love golf so much but here are a few thoughts. Read more »

#113 – New Christian Covers

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 8, 2011 by scotthiga

Last week I wrote about some of my least favorite Christian covers of secular songs. While I don’t necessarily agree with the practice, here are some secular songs just dying to be covered by a Christian artist.  Read more »

#112 – Representative Anthony Weiner

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 7, 2011 by scotthiga

SMH

I’ve felt like Representative Anthony Weiner before.

Well, not exactly like him. I’ve never publicly tweeted inappropriate photos to anyone. I’ve never even privately tweeted, texted or emailed inappropriate photos. Actually, I’ve never taken any inappropriate photos either of myself or anyone else. So I don’t feel exactly like Representative Weiner.

I have had that sinking feeling, though, in my stomach when I worry that I sent a text to the wrong person or a direct message to everyone. Which is why we need to think before we tweet. Read more »

#111 – Review: X-Men: First Class

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on June 6, 2011 by scotthiga

I wasn’t even sure if I was going to see X-Men: First Class. X-Men 3 was terrible and I didn’t even subject myself to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I didn’t have a lot of faith in the X-Men movie franchise and I worried that X-men: First Class was just another mindless cash grab that wouldn’t live up to my favorite comic.

Fortunately I was wrong. X-Men: First Class was a great return to form for the franchise after it had spent some time wandering in the wilderness.

I thought X-Men: First Class was great and I really want to see it again. Below are some thoughts on the film from a Christian perspective. I’ll do my best to keep things spoiler-free but one of the characters in the movie can control metal and another can read minds. I’m not going to tell you who, but they’re in there. Read more »

#110 – Why I Haven’t Read Harry Potter

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 3, 2011 by scotthiga

I’ve got a glaring blindspot in my nerd life. James tells us to confess our sins to our brothers and sisters, though, so here goes:

I’ve never read any Harry Potter books and I’ve never seen any Harry Potter movies.

Here are five reasons why I haven’t read Harry Potter. Read more »
