#168 – Reading the Bible

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on August 31, 2011 by scotthiga

I’ve already documented my struggles with prayer. Prayer doesn’t come as naturally to me as it does to some other people. Unfortunately, sometimes reading the Bible doesn’t come that easy to me either. I know there’s more to our lives with God than praying and reading the Bible, but those are two core disciplines that all followers of Jesus need to employ on a regular basis.

Here are some nerdy ways to help with reading the Bible.

#167 – The Water of Life

Posted in Uncategorized on August 30, 2011 by scotthiga

I consider myself a top shelf nerd. I would be willing to place my nerd pedigree alongside anyone else’s. I may be lacking in Harry Potter knowledge but I more than make up for it with Star Trek: The Next Generation and video game knowledge. Any pride I felt in my nerd knowledge, though, was erased when I read about this:

Compassion’s Water of Life.

I’m a nerd but my nerdiness has done nothing to better the world. The nerds who invented Compassion’s Water of Life have potentially saved the lives of millions of people.  Read more »

#166 – Distractions

Posted in Uncategorized on August 29, 2011 by scotthiga

I am working towards ordination within my denomination. Part of that process involves writing a personal doctrinal statement about my beliefs on topics like God, salvation and the end of the world. I haven’t been in school for four years and I had forgotten how easy it is to get distracted from a paper or any type of homework. Here are some nerdy distractions that have been preying on me.

#165 – 5 Nerdy Bible Stories

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on August 26, 2011 by scotthiga

The Bible is the bestselling book of all time. That may be hard to believe because it doesn’t have any vampires or teenagers killing each other, but it’s true. And while parts of the Bible might be made a little more interesting with the addition of some nerdclinations, it definitely has its nerdy moments. Here are five nerdy Bible stories.

#164 – Steve Jobs

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 25, 2011 by scotthiga

Steve Jobs is retiring from his position as CEO of Apple.

This news wasn’t that trumatic to me.

I am not an Applephile like so many people I know.

I don’t have a large part of my stock portfolio invested in Apple (I don’t even have a stock portfolio).

I don’t own a Macbook which I fear will become obsolete with Jobs’ departure.

While I’ve never really emotionally invested in Jobs or the company he created, I have marveled at his creativity and his ability to innovate. I remember the first time I used an iPod; I was completely floored by that small piece of technology. It boggled my mind to think that my numerous CD wallets, with my hundreds of albums, could fit in the palm of my hand. The iPod went on to resurrect Apple and led to further innovations in technology like iTunes, the iPhone and the iPad.

It’s so easy to appreciate creativity and innovation because those qualities are at the very center of God’s character. The second thing we learn about God from Genesis is that he is a creator. I don’t know if Steve Jobs believes in God or not, but his creativity and innovation are a reflection of the infinite creativity and innovation of our Heavenly Father.  Read more »

#163 – Nerdy Retirement

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on August 24, 2011 by scotthiga

Yesterday Alycia and I got to spend time with my grandpa and his wife. My grandma passed away 6 years ago and my grandpa’s new wife is amazing and completely age appropriate. At the end of September they are going on a 30-day cruise to Hawaii and Tahiti. Even though I’m only 29-years-old retirement sounds totally awesome. Here are some ways nerds would enjoy spending their retirement.  Read more »

#162 – Fantasy Football

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 23, 2011 by scotthiga

When the final Harry Potter movie came out, I was fascinated with how something so inherently nerdy lost its entire negative stigma. Now, as the start of the NFL season is upon us, I’m just as fascinated with how something inherently un-nerdy like football has gained negative, nerdy stigmas.

Fantasy football is what happens when giant nerds also have an interest in sports. Sometime nerds couldn’t care less about what happens in the world of competitive sports. Some nerds need explanations for what happens in the Super Bowl or March Madness. Other nerds, though, check ESPN.com as often as they troll World of Warcraft message boards.

The NFL couldn’t be further removed from nerdom. The NFL is populated with world-class athletes who spent their time working out, practicing and hanging out with cheerleaders. For most NFL players, the closest they ever got to nerdom was copying off of a nerd in Spanish class. The NFL is inherently un-nerdy but fantasy football has transformed it into a top shelf nerdclination.  Read more »

#161 – Marriage: Year One

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 22, 2011 by scotthiga

Yesterday Alycia and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary. Compared to couples like my grandparents who were married for 60 years, one year doesn’t seem like that much of an accomplishment. Even though it’s only marks 365 days, a one year anniversary is a great time to reflect on the past 12 months and look forward to the next 59 years. Here are some lessons that I learned during my first year of marriage.  Read more »

#160 – LOL

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 19, 2011 by scotthiga

The Bible is very clear about lying

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. – Exodus 20:16

Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. – Proverbs 12:19

Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices. – Colossians 3:9

Lying is wrong, hurts our relationships and shouldn’t be a part of our new lives in Christ. Even though the Bible is explicit in its attitude towards lying, there are countless of Christians who do it every day, often times without even realizing it. This epidemic of lying is best represented by three small letters.

LOL.  Read more »

#159 – The Greener Grass

Envy is something nerds often experience.

Envy over the Blu-Ray collection of another nerd.

Envy over the Xbox Live Gamerscore of another nerd.

Envy over the greater encyclopedic Star Wars knowledge of another nerd.

Envy isn’t just reserved for nerds and their nerdclinations, though. Everyone, nerd and non-nerd alike, experiences envy at some point or another.

When we’re younger we envy the possessions of other children. We see that little Timmy has a better truck or little Suzy has a better dollhouse (granted, Timmy could also have the dollhouse and Suzy could also have the truck). We see the possessions of others and we envy them, we want them, we wish we had them.

As we get older we still experience possession envy. We see that big Timmy has a better actual truck and big Suzy has a better actual house. When a friend pulls up in a new car or a family member tells us about their exotic vacation, envy can start to well up within us.  Read more »
