#190 – Shake The Dust Off

Posted in Uncategorized on September 30, 2011 by scotthiga

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. – Luke 9:1-6

Even though Jesus tells his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, the passage above concedes that not everyone will want to become a disciple. One such person responded to me yesterday on Twitter.

In reference to my post yesterday I tweeted, “Since Jim and Pam had sex before marriage, should Christians stop watching The Office?” The question was tongue-in-cheek and intended to entice people to read the post.

To that tweet, someone responded, “yes–christians should sit in a windowless room and not talk to anyone and not go anywhere but church-please do that-jesus asks”. Read more »

#189 – Christian TV

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on September 29, 2011 by scotthiga

A few weeks ago in his sermon, my pastor admitted to watching Modern Family. By the way he defended himself it’s like he had just admitted to watching Cinemax after 10:00pm. Should pastors or any Christian apologize for watching Modern Family or other similar television shows?

There’s a lot of TV that isn’t edifying to the soul. True Blood with its rampant sexuality and disturbing violence should probably make the list of shows Christians shouldn’t watch. But I certainly hope that there are more shows on the list of programs Christians can watch than The 700 Club, televised showings of Fireproof and Matlock.

I watch a lot of TV shows on a regular basis: Modern Family, Community, The Office, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. All of those shows have themes and plot points that don’t always line up with Biblical standards. Read more »

#188 – Nerd Day

Posted in Uncategorized on September 28, 2011 by scotthiga

The students in our youth group are going through homecoming season. That means a lot of pictures, a lot of dressing up and hopefully as little drama as possible. The schools have a “Spirit Week” leading up to homecoming in which the students dress up for different themes each day. One theme that I’ve seen at a number of different schools is “Nerd Day”.

For some of us “Nerd Day” is every day.

From the pictures on Facebook, “Nerd Day” consists of nothing more than wearing taped glasses, suspenders and other nerdy stereotypes. Those are just window dressing, though, and don’t really make up a “Nerd Day”. Below are some components of an actual “Nerd Day”. Read more »

#187 – Kindle

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on September 27, 2011 by scotthiga

My sister got one first.

Then Alycia, my wife, got one.

I wasn’t sure I wanted one but, for my birthday, I got my own.

The Kindle.

Amazon’s e-reader has been on the market for nearly four years and has revolutionized how people read books. I was unsure about whether or not I even wanted an e-reader and now, with a Kindle in hand, I’m still unsure.  Read more »

#186 – Happy Birthday

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on September 26, 2011 by scotthiga

30.

Today is my 30th birthday and I have been fielding a lot of questions about how I feel. Significant marks in age, like decades, are supposed to make us feel different or at least a little more introspective. And while I’m not experiencing a third-of-my-life crisis, my introspection has led to a lot of comparing. Instead of freaking out about turning 30, I’ve been asking older people what they were doing and what they had accomplished by the time they hit three decades.  Read more »

#185 – Farewell, Rob.

Posted in Uncategorized on September 23, 2011 by scotthiga

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” – Luke 24:32

After realizing they had been speaking to the resurrected Jesus, two disciples say they felt like their hearts were burning within them.

The first time I heard Rob Bell speak in person, I felt the same way.

In September of 2003, over eight years ago now, I first heard Rob Bell speak at a small youth pastors’ conference in the San Bernardino Mountains. The group was significantly smaller than those to which Bell speaks now, yet his fervor and passion for Jesus were abundantly clear.

Bell opened up the scriptures and the world of Jesus in ways that I hadn’t ever thought of. His ability to unlock deeper meanings through the context of Jesus’ day was truly remarkable. I told those I was with that I felt like a fire was burning within my heart.

#184 – Facebook Changes

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on September 22, 2011 by scotthiga

Not many people like change. This reality is never clearer than when Facebook decides to change its layout.

On Tuesday night I got home from youth group and spent some time on Facebook, to tell some students it was nice seeing them and to tell others that I missed seeing them. While traversing Zuckerberg’s social network, I noticed some changes had been made. Even if I hadn’t noticed the changes, I would have known something was up from all of the angry status updates or stories on the local news.

Change can be a scary thing, whether that’s with Facebook, careers or relationships. Change adds an unknown element to our lives and reminds us that we ultimately are not in control. Thankfully, though, the one who is in control loves us and he will never change.  Read more »

#183 – Nerdy Soundtracks

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on September 21, 2011 by scotthiga

Music is a gift from God.

It’s difficult to imagine a world without music; without the singing of birds, the songs of whales or even those kids on Glee. Music isn’t solely reserved for nature and glorified karaoke, though, nerds have their piece of the melodic pie.

One of the first CDs I ever bought was a very nerdy Weird Al Yankovic album. My musical tastes have evolved and thankfully there is better nerdy music today than just parodies. Some of the best nerd music comes in the form of soundtracks. Below are a couple of the best.

#182 – The Flow of the Spirt

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on September 20, 2011 by scotthiga

This fall our church is doing The Me I Want to Be for a church-wide campaign. The Me I Want to Be is a great book by John Ortberg about becoming the person God intended us to become. The campaign includes weekend messages, small group curriculum, daily Bible readings and the book itself. We kicked off the campaign last weekend by looking at stepping into the flow of the Holy Spirit.

In his book, Ortberg contends that becoming the person God created us to be isn’t about more disciplines and trying harder. Instead it’s about stepping into the flow of the Holy Spirit and allowing him to wash over and transform our lives. I like this image of surrendering to the Spirit and allowing him to move me and reshape me as he sees fit.

The image is definitely more dynamic than thinking I just have to be better at my devotionals or spend more time in prayer to be who God wants me to be.  Read more »

#181 – The Lion King

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on September 19, 2011 by scotthiga

This weekend I went with some students to see The Lion King. Seeing it with students was a great excuse to see a kids’ movie, which I really wanted to see anyway. From the opening scene at Pride Rock, I was immediately caught up in all the nostalgia of the Disney classic. Here are some reflections on The Lion King, complete with spoilers because we are way past the spoiler statute of limitations.  Read more »
