#211 – Halloween? Bah Humbug!!!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on October 31, 2011 by scotthiga

I don’t like much about Halloween, but this older video from the Today Show is one of my favorites.

The video is a little long but toward the end the Ewoks, who were allegedly drunk, begin acting out and confirm what Return of the Jedi told us: Ewoks know how to party.

Partying really does seem to be the focus of Halloween these days. I remember when I was younger and the focus for everyone seemed to be on children dressing up and going trick or treating. Now it seems that the focus is on finding the best party to which people can wear their skimpiest and most revealing costume.

Obviously I’m no longer a child and I don’t yet have children, so it’s possible that I no longer see the trick or treating aspect because I’m not a part of that world. But, from talking to a number of people, trick or treating seems to be down across the board and adults seem to be claiming Halloween as their own more and more every year.

Really my disdain for the current trend in Halloween has nothing to do with parties or adults dressing up or women thinking that lingerie is an acceptable costume. When it comes down to it, I just don’t like Halloween that much. Read more »

#210 – Cheap Bible Costumes

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on October 28, 2011 by scotthiga

I still don’t like Halloween but you can check out yesterday’s post about extravagant Bible costumes.

Since Halloween is fast approaching and time is limited, I’ve created a list of cheap and simple Bible costumes. Try donning one of these at a Halloween party this weekend.

#209 – Extravagant Bible Costumes

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on October 27, 2011 by scotthiga

I don’t like Halloween and I’m planning on sharing those thoughts next Monday.

For today and tomorrow, though, I thought we’d take a look at some biblical Halloween costumes. Since you have a little more time to pull a costume together today, we’ll look at some more extravagant options. Tomorrow, when people are trying to throw something together, we’ll look at some simpler options.

Here are some extravagant bible costumes.

#208 – 3-D Bible Stories

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on October 26, 2011 by scotthiga

George Lucas is rereleasing The Phantom Menace in 3-D next February. The Nerdwebs have been full of people throwing vitriol at Lucas for what they think is an obvious money grab. They’re also angry because Lucas is releasing Episode I, instead of any of the original trilogies first.

I’m not that upset and I’m actually looking forward to seeing The Phantom Menace in 3-D. The podracing scene alone will be worth the price of admission.

Lucas rereleasing his story in 3-D, though, got me thinking about which Bible stories I would like to see in 3-D. Read more »

#207 – Banned Youth Group Games

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on October 25, 2011 by scotthiga

One of the most fundamental aspects of youth group is the game. I’ve been playing games at youth group since I was 12 and they’ve been a big part of our youth group since before I was the pastor. There’s nothing better than a bunch of students running and screaming at the beginning of a doge ball game.

Some games, though, are too dangerous even for youth group. Much to the disappointment of our students, there are a few games I’ve had to ban. Read more »

#206 – Elevating the Pulpit

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on October 24, 2011 by scotthiga

Yesterday, a popular speaker was the guest speaker at my friend’s church. When I asked him about it, he said that it was good he had gotten to church early because it was standing room only. Word had gotten out that the speaker was going to be there and the church’s average attendance ballooned with people coming to see him.

I don’t know for sure, but it’s probably safe to assume some people ditched out on their own churches in order to hear the guest speaker.

And I’m not sure what to think about that.

Part of me is fine with people skipping out on their own church for one week to go and hear another pastor. If Billy Graham had been speaking at a nearby church yesterday, I might have excused myself from my church to see him – and I was giving announcements.

There’s another part of me, though, with which ditching church to hear another speaker doesn’t sit right.

That part of me thinks that someone is embracing one aspect of church while abandoning everything else. Read more »

#205 – The End…Again

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on October 21, 2011 by scotthiga

It’s the end.

Again.

Five months ago the world waited with baited breath (not really) to see if Harold Camping’s prediction of the end of the world would come true. The world didn’t end and Camping defended his prediction by saying that a spiritual judgment occurred on May 21 and the world’s final judgment and ultimate destruction would take place on October 21.

Today is October 21.

To be fair, I’m writing this blog post on October 20. I have no idea if the world will or won’t end on October 21. I’m going to assume that it won’t and continue writing this post. If the world does end on October 21, then I’ll have written this post in vain.

In vain or not, here are five things I would have missed and five things I wouldn’t have missed had the world ended five months ago. Read more »

#204 – Villains Are Cooler

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on October 20, 2011 by scotthiga

Darth Maul.

The Joker.

Khan Noonien Singh.

Based upon the list above and many more names we could add to it, villains are cooler. Super heroes may be more heroic, they may save more people and they may do the right thing. But, when it comes down to it, villains are just cooler.

Here are a few reasons. Read more »

#203 – Nice Things

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on October 19, 2011 by scotthiga

Yesterday I wrote about two Star Wars Lego sets that together would cost nearly $1,000.

One. Thousand. Dollars.

For Legos.

That’s ridiculous.

I often tell Alycia how someday it would be nice to be able to just buy a $1,000 worth of Legos or a $1,500 watch. I like watches, sunglasses and ridiculous toys. Alycia is a much better person than me, though, and she she’d much rather save our money or use it for a good cause.

If I did buy a Lego Super Star Destroyer, once assembled it would just remind me that I spent $650 on a toy. That money could have gone to provide 11 water filtration systems, providing clean water to those in need for life. Read more »

#202 – Toys “R” Us

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on October 18, 2011 by scotthiga

Alycia, my wife, graduated from college in June and has been looking to begin her career. Obviously now isn’t the most ideal time to look for work. So until she can get into her field, she recently got a job at Toys “R” Us.

Toys. Freaking. “R”. Us.

If you had told me when I was 10 that my future wife was going to work at Toys “R” Us my head would have exploded. Like telling at 15-year-old Nick Cannon that he would one day marry Mariah Carey, I would have been dumbfounded. I wouldn’t have believed that my future wife would have access to any toy imaginable.

Since God’s favor is obviously upon Alycia and me, below are some toys I wouldn’t mind getting this Christmas with her employee discount.

Death Star/Super Star Destroyer Lego Set
