Bottom 5 – #1: #135 – Honduran Death Star Trench

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on December 30, 2011 by scotthiga

I wrote this post in Honduras late at night. I was tired from digging a ditch all day and wasn’t up to writing a full post. So I posted a video instead. This may have been the least popular post of the year but it was worth the extra sleep I got that night in Honduras.

I was going to finish off this week with a post about the next group of nerdy summer movies. I don’t have a lot of time, though, so check out this video of the trench we dug in Honduras. It reminds me of the Death Star. Read more »

2011 Top 5 – #1: #130 – A Lighter Faith

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on December 30, 2011 by scotthiga

This is another post that benefited from Google Image search. I wrote this post on the night before our high school group went home from summer camp. Of all the posts I wrote this year, this one may have had the greatest personal impact on me. When I think about my own life with God I don’t want to have a lighter faith; I hope to have something more.

Today we’re leaving camp and heading home. It has been an awesome week spending time with students and seeing God work in their lives. I’ve spent a lot of weeks at a lot of different camps, though. I’ve seen God work in students’ lives, I’ve seen students make commitments and I’ve seen those commitments fade as time moved on.

That’s a lighter faith and God has called us to so much more.  Read more »

2011 Bottom 5 – #2: #102 – No Service

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on December 29, 2011 by scotthiga

I remember furiously writing this post at a Starbucks in Yucaipa. We’d left the retreat center for a quick trip and I didn’t have much time to write. I think it shows in the post.

I’m spending some time away with our church’s pastoral team. We’re working on some strategy and planning while away from the office. We’re at a retreat center in the mountains which means I have no cell service.

No service.

Those are two of my least favorite words in the English language. Read more »

2011 Top 5 – #2: #78 – Nerdy Church Buildings

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on December 29, 2011 by scotthiga

I wrote this post after seeing the Sandcrawler building. Our church is functional but I would be much happier going to work in a Sandcrawler. This post got so many hits because, for a while, if you Googled “Helm’s Deep” the picture in this post was the top result.

George Lucas is building a new home for the Singapore-based LucasFilm Animation. Below is an artist’s rendering of what that building will look like.

 Most. Awesome. Building. Ever.

I don’t think I would ever want to leave work if I worked in a building that looked like the Jawas’ Sandcrawler. I would show up for my first day of work and just stay there forever.

I would shower in the sink.

I would set up a hot plate and eat beans out of a can every meal.

I would jump out of my cubicle and scare my fellow employees every morning by yelling “Utini!!!”

I can’t think of a more perfect office building than a huge, reflective Sandcrawler. But what would make the perfect church building?

There are plenty of different church buildings around the world. This summer I’m going to help build a simple cement block church building in Honduras. There are underground churches that literally meet underground. There are megachurches across America with campuses that function like small cities.

In spite of all the churches I’ve seen, though, I’ve never seen a church as cool as a giant Sandcrawler building. Here are some potential buildings that could make a church as cool as LucasFilm Animation’s new home. Read more »

2011 Bottom 5 – #3: #171 – Labor Day

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on December 28, 2011 by scotthiga

This post was all about rest and taking a break. Apparently people took that as an invitation to take a break from reading this post.

Today is Labor Day in the United States.

The holiday celebrates the contributions of workers and was organized by labor unions in the late 19th century.

God also celebrates work but he doesn’t do it once a year at the beginning of September. God celebrates work once a week on the Sabbath.  Read more »

2011 Top 5 – #3: #54 – Unholy Breakfast Cereals

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on December 28, 2011 by scotthiga

I remember I wrote this post while in Las Vegas visiting my grandma. It’s another post that benefited from Google Image searches. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think people mainly used the Internet to find pictures of Dig ‘Em Frog.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a time to celebrate, eat corned beef and break off all communication with any friends that pinch you for not wearing green. It’s also a time to reflect upon how our culture and society have been influenced and shaped by the Irish. That influence can be summed up with one image.

That’s right. The Lucky Charms leprechaun, Lucky. Read more »

2011 Bottom 5 – #4: #216 – Falling Back

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on December 27, 2011 by scotthiga

I still have no affinity for the conclusion of Daylight Savings Time. Now that we’ve passed the winter solstice, though, I’m feeling a lot better. I actually liked this post. Maybe it never caught on because people love the fall too much.

I think Superman is pretty lame. Even with that, we still have something in common.

We both like the sun.

Superman likes the sun because it’s what gives him his super powers. Something in the radiation from our yellow sun turns the normal Kryptonian, Kal-El, into the extraordinary Superman.

The sun doesn’t give me super powers but it does energize and excite me.

So the annual tradition of setting back clocks and ending daylight savings time has quite the effect on me. In the two months following the end of daylight savings time, until the winter solstice, I am mopier, more unmotivated and more prone to want to stay inside.

There are some people who love this time of year and the opportunity to cuddle up with a book, sit by a fire or drink some hot chocolate. But I hate the dark. I hate this time of year. And I’ve got some biblical evidence to support my feelings. Read more »

2011 Top 5 – #4: #189 – Christian TV

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on December 27, 2011 by scotthiga

This post led to some good discussion about the gray areas in which Christians live. The Bible is clear on a lot of things but not what is and isn’t acceptable TV. I’m still watching The Office, Community, Parks and Recreation and Modern Family. Even after a full fall of watching those shows, I’ve still managed to love Jesus.

A few weeks ago in his sermon, my pastor admitted to watching Modern Family. By the way he defended himself it’s like he had just admitted to watching Cinemax after 10:00pm. Should pastors or any Christian apologize for watching Modern Family or other similar television shows?

There’s a lot of TV that isn’t edifying to the soul. True Blood with its rampant sexuality and disturbing violence should probably make the list of shows Christians shouldn’t watch. But I certainly hope that there are more shows on the list of programs Christians can watch than The 700 Club, televised showings of Fireproof and Matlock.

I watch a lot of TV shows on a regular basis: Modern FamilyCommunityThe Office30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. All of those shows have themes and plot points that don’t always line up with Biblical standards. Read more »

2011 Bottom 5 – #5: #172 – Michael Vick

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on December 26, 2011 by scotthiga

I wrote this post after drafting Michael Vick in three of my four fantasy leagues. Seeing how things turned out for the Eagles and my fantasy teams, I wish I could have a second chance.

I participated in three fantasy football drafts this weekend and Michael Vick ended up on each of my teams. I drafted Vick because I think he can help my teams win but his is also a great story.

It’s great that Michael Vick is actually getting his second chance; he has appeared repentant and made the right choices since his release from jail. I worry, though, that Vick’s second chance wouldn’t have been so quick in coming if hadn’t led the Philadelphia Eagles and numerous fantasy owners to the playoffs.  Read more »

2011 Top 5 – #5: #132 Universal Nerdiness

Posted in Uncategorized on December 26, 2011 by scotthiga

I remember writing this post while I was getting ready to leave the country, which was no easy task. Like most of the top 5 posts of the year, this post received a lot of hits because of the images. People love searching for “taped nerd glasses”. Even though I didn’t find any nerds in Honduras, I was able to have some great conversations even with my Spanish, as broken as it is.

I’m leaving for Honduras today to go on a mission trip with my church. We’ll be building a church and running VBS for some kids in the village. I’m excited for the trip but I’ve forgotten a lot of the Spanish I once knew. I’m worried about my ability to effectively communicate with my words. I’m also worried about my ability to effectively communicate my nerdiness.

Is nerdiness universal? Like love and doctors, does nerdiness have no borders?

In the United States it’s pretty clear that I’m a nerd. I love Star Wars, play video games and squeal like a little girl when I see the trailer for Captain America. But over these next 10 days in Honduras, will that part of my identity get lost?

I don’t know, but here are some things that might be universally nerdy.

Taped Glasses
