#348 – Review: Alien

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on May 16, 2012 by scotthiga

In preparation for Prometheus, I finally sat down and watched Alien for the first time. I have put off watching Alien because it scared me. The movie was very intense but I don’t think it will give me nightmares or keep me up at night.

Below are some reflections I had while watching Alien. Read more »

#347 – First Contact with Grace

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on May 15, 2012 by scotthiga

I love Star Trek: First Contact. It’s easily the best of the Next Generation films. It’s not as good as The Wrath of Khan but I’d put First Contact up there with The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country.

In First Contact the Enterprise and her crew must keep the Borg from preventing humanity’s first warp flight, which will lead to first contact with the Vulcans and a new era for Earth.

I’ve been thinking a lot about God’s grace lately and I think First Contact has helped me understand it a little better. Read more »

#346 – Biblical Mothers

Dancing with my mom.

Yesterday we celebrated Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day can be a day of celebration but it can also be difficult for those who’ve lost their mothers or never had the opportunity to be mothers. We do all share the common bond of having mothers, though, unless we’re in the Matrix and we’re actually all living in tubes. Trusting that we haven’t been turned into batteries, we all have had a mother at some point and some are better than others.

Here are some of the best and worst biblical mothers. Read more »

#345 – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 11, 2012 by scotthiga

It’s been a little over a month since I last spent time with Harry, Ron and Hermione at Hogwarts. I enjoyed The Chamber of Secrets but thought that it felt like a standalone adventure. I’m hoping that will change with The Prisoner of Azkaban.

I know that the story and characters are all connected but I was under the assumption that the Harry Potter books were more serialized. I thought they were more like Battlestar Galactica than The Next Generation. I’ve been told that the larger narrative begins to pick up in The Prisoner of Azkaban so hopefully there won’t be as many throwaway chapters about dragon eggs and quidditch matches. Read more »

#344 – Licensed to Ill

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on May 10, 2012 by scotthiga

Last week Adam Yauch, MCA of the Beastie Boys, passed away from complications with cancer.

It’s always interesting to see how we’re affected by celebrity deaths. Sometimes celebrities die and I couldn’t care less. Other times celebrities die and it feels like someone I know passed away.

When I heard that MCA had died I was really upset.

Even though it came out five years after I was born, the Beastie Boys album Licensed to Ill provided the soundtrack to my high school experience. Everyone in my group of friends had the album and we all listened to it, when we were alone and when we were together.

Hearing that MCA died was like hearing I’d lost one of my high school friends. Licensed to Ill really was that big a part of our lives. Read more »

#343 – Summer Vacation

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on May 9, 2012 by scotthiga

Last night we had our final night of youth group for the school year. It’s always a bittersweet night, saying goodbye to the seniors but knowing that I have a few Tuesday offs in the future.

Working with students I’ve never had to get out of the rhythm of summer vacation. We push hard from August-May during the school year and then tone things down a little bit during the summer. I don’t take the summers off but we have more trips and special events as opposed to the weekly grind of youth group.

So even though I haven’t been in school for five years, I still feel like I get something of a summer vacation.

That mindset can be a little dangerous, though. Read more »

#342 – Getting Old

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on May 8, 2012 by scotthiga

This past Friday our student ministry had its annual Overnighter. The Overnighter consists of staying up all night and playing games. Unfortunately the games don’t require a controller but balls, bats and lots of running. After all that running around, three days later I’m still sore and my body is still weary. Our students enjoy pointing how that makes me old.

Here are some nerdy ways to tell that you’re getting old.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

When you think about Obi-Wan Kenobi and this image pops in your mind:

instead of this one:

then you’re probably getting old. Read more »
