#608 – Superformula

superformula-hed-2013

This is one of the greatest nerd stories I’ve ever read.

JWT joined with Warner Bros. and the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center in São Paulo, Brazil, to craft a super-powerful campaign designed to help children with cancer better understand their treatment and be less frightened by chemotherapy. The initiative revolves around superheroes. The game room at the hospital is tricked out like the interior of the Justice League, and colorful chemo-bag covers bear the insignia of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, transforming the oft-scary drugs into a “Superformula.” Specially drawn comic books tell medically realistic tales of the Dark Knight and his friends defeating cancer-like diseases to resume their war against evil. Although it uses D.C. Comics characters, this effort is a marvel, helping kids gain knowledge, courage and faith in themselves—the ultimate superpowers. – Adweek

Cancer is terrible and it’s made more terrible when it impacts children. The fact that this hospital is using DC super heroes to make cancer less terrible warms my heart. I love that this hospital is going to tremendous lengths to encourage children with cancer. Stuffed animals are great but a comic book about Batman overcoming cancer-like diseases is even better. #533 – Ash Wednesday

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on February 13, 2013 by scotthiga

Today Christians all around the world will don an ash cross on their forehead in celebration of Ash Wednesday. I grew up in a Baptist church and don’t have a very liturgical or traditional background. Until a few years ago I didn’t even know what Ash Wednesday was and, even then, thought it was something only Roman Catholics celebrated. Thankfully my knowledge has grown and I’m excited because our church is having an Ash Wednesday service this year.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lent season, the 40 days leading up to Easter. Traditionally Lent has been a time for Christians to prepare their hearts for Easter by focusing on Christ and the work he wants to do in our lives. As the kickoff show to Lent, Ash Wednesday encourages Christians for focus on their own mortality and the promise of new life in Christ. The ash symbolizes that we are nothing but dust and ash, made alive because of Jesus and his work.

Focusing on our own mortality can be difficult. Thankfully, though, we can learn from the mistakes of these nerdy characters that wrestled with their own mortality.

#482 – Nerdy Bachelors

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on November 20, 2012 by scotthiga

I’m in Las Vegas again. Other than those living here, do other Christian bloggers write many posts in Vegas?

I’m actually on a little vacation celebrating my best friend’s wife’s birthday. Unfortunately Alycia had to work so I’m flying solo in Vegas. I haven’t done anything crazy or sinful. I’m enjoying myself but I desperately miss my wife.

I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be a bachelor but below are some nerdy bachelors who could teach me a thing or two.

#439 – You Are What You Do

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on September 20, 2012 by scotthiga

Rachel: You could die. At least tell me your name.
Batman: It’s not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me.

The above dialogue is from a great scene in Batman Begins. Earlier in the film, in an attempt to defend himself to Rachel, Bruce says that there’s more to him beneath the surface. Rachel counters by telling Bruce that it’s what we do that defines us.

That isn’t just true for super heroes; it’s also true for followers of Jesus. Read more »

#397 – Review: The Dark Knight Rises

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on July 24, 2012 by scotthiga

My excitement for The Dark Knight Rises was tempered by the tragedy in Aurora, CO. However, I did still see the conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy this past weekend.

At this point I’m not entirely sure how I felt about TDKR. I thought that TDKR was a fitting conclusion as it incorporated a number of themes from both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I know that I liked the movie but I’m not really sure how much I liked the movie. More than anything I think I’m just sad that this particular Batman saga is over and that Warner Bros. is undoubtedly already planning its next reboot.

Below are some thoughts I had while watching The Dark Knight Rises. I’ll do my best to keep things spoiler-free because I’d hate myself for ruining Jim Carey’s cameo as the Riddler. Read more »

#394 – Midnight Showings

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on July 19, 2012 by scotthiga

The Dark Knight Rises releases this week. Because of a busy schedule on Friday and Saturday, I’m not sure when I’ll be able to see it. This wouldn’t have been a problem in my younger days; I would have been ready to go for a midnight showing.

Not so much anymore. Read more »

#387 – Spoiler Alert

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on July 10, 2012 by scotthiga

I’m starting to get really excited for The Dark Knight Rises. It’s less than two weeks away and I want to see how Christopher Nolan wraps up his Batman trilogy. Since the movie is coming out so soon, it’s more and more difficult to avoid spoilers.

I try my best to avoid spoilers because they really do spoil the movie. I don’t have unrealistic expectations about spoilers. There’s definitely a statute of limitations on spoilers. If I hadn’t seen The Empire Strikes Back by now, I really couldn’t get mad at someone telling me that Vader is Luke’s father. When it comes to recent movies, though, I just don’t want to know. I’ve avoided spoilers this far with The Dark Knight Rises and, if I can make it 11 more days, I’ll go in with a clean slate.

I don’t like spoilers when it comes to movies but I think I wouldn’t mind them when it comes to life. I wouldn’t mind knowing some of the plot twists and turns that I’m going to face. Read more »

#375 – Nerdy Summer Movie Preview: Part 2

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 22, 2012 by scotthiga

It’s hard to believe but we’re almost halfway through the summer. So far this summer there have been some great nerdy movies (The Avengers), some good nerdy movies (Prometheus) and some bad nerdy movies (Battleship). I’m still waiting to see Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and I’ll be waiting a really long time to see G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which got pushed back to next March.

Here’s a look at some of the nerdy movies coming out in July and August.

#180 – 5 Biblical Sidekicks

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on September 16, 2011 by scotthiga

Batman had Robin.

Han had Chewie.

Frodo had Sam.

Donkey had Diddy (as did Biggie).

Some of the greatest heroes don’t do it on their own. Whether they’re protecting Gotham, taking on the Empire, destroying the one ring or collecting bananas, heroes sometimes need a sidekick. Even though sidekicks can be useful, they can also be pretty lame. Here are five biblical sidekicks who just couldn’t live up to their heroic counterparts.  Read more »
