#578 – Nerdy Encouragers

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on April 24, 2013 by scotthiga

And we’re back.

I took a week off from blogging because I’m going through a trying season right now. Nothing too terrible but it was nice to take some time off. I’m still not completely through my season but there are some exciting things happening at TheChristianNerd this week, of which you’ll be made aware on Friday. In order to get ready for those exciting things I thought I’d get back to blogging.

One of the best parts about my current season is the people who have encouraged me. I have a tremendous wife as well as tremendous friends and family who have supported me, loved me and encouraged me. They have set an amazing example of what it means to be encouraging. If I needed more examples, though, I could look to these nerdy encouragers.

#570 – Hiking

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on April 5, 2013 by scotthiga

I enjoy spending time with God. For me that mostly means reading God’s word, going through liturgical prayers and spending time in silence. For Alycia, though, that means spending time with God in nature. She likes reading the Bible and praying but she really gets a lot out of nature. So yesterday we went on a hike together.

Here are some nerdy environments through which I would like to take a hike.

#567 – Hope Springs Eternal

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on April 2, 2013 by scotthiga

The Chicago Cubs kicked off their 2013 season yesterday. I’ve been a fan of the Cubs since I was a child even though they’ve brought me more heartache than joy. I don’t have much hope for this season but, as always, hope springs eternal.

Here are some of the most hopeful moments in nerdom.

#566 – Easter Sunday

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on April 1, 2013 by scotthiga

Easter-Sunday

There are a few moments in movies that will give me goose bumps regardless of how many times I see them.

In The Two Towers, when Gandalf and Eomer ride in at the end to rescue Helm’s Deep, I always get goose bumps.

When the Millennium Falcon comes shooting out of the Death Star and Luke escapes with his father’s body, I always get goose bumps.

When the Avengers finally assemble in New York City, amidst scores of screaming Chitauri, I always get goose bumps.

I’ve seen those scenes numerous times and I know they’re going to happen. It’s no surprise that Gandalf saves the day or that the Empire is defeated or that the Avengers assemble. Yet whenever I see those moments, even though I know they’re coming, it’s like my body can’t help but be inspired.

I don’t know if it’s my body causing the goose bumps or my soul, but there’s a part of us that is inspired when good overcomes evil. We love seeing good defeat evil. Read more »

2012 Top 5 – #4: #372 – Best Nerdy Vacations

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on December 25, 2012 by scotthiga

Mele Kalikimaka!!! In case you weren’t aware, that is the Hawaiian way to say merry Christmas to you. Six months ago today I was heading home from a family vacation in Hawaii. Not only did I have a great time in the Aloha State, but it was also the impetus for this year’s fourth most popular post. I love Hawaii and wouldn’t mind going back. However, I also wouldn’t mind a vacation at one of these nerdy spots.

I’m on vacation this week in our nation’s 50th state. My family and I are on the island of Oahu visiting my grandma. I’m so excited to be on vacation with the chance to get away and find a rhythm of rest. I’ve scheduled posts throughout my vacation so there will be new content while I’m soaking up the sun. If you comment, though, I may not respond as quickly as I normally do.

Here are some of the best nerdy vacation spots.

#488 – Epic Bible Characters

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on November 28, 2012 by scotthiga

News broke yesterday that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are reprising their roles as Professor Xavier and Magneto in the upcoming sequel to X-Men: First Class. I’m excited to see Stewart and McKellen once again entering the X-Men universe, even though I love Stewart as Picard and McKellen as Gandalf. It’s amazing that these two men have had the opportunity to portray four of the most epic roles in nerdom. It takes a lot of range to play Picard and Xavier, Magneto and Gandalf.

Below are some Bible characters that didn’t play two roles, but definitely lived some of the most epic lives ever. Read more »

#472 – Nerdy Presidents

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on November 6, 2012 by scotthiga

It’s Election Day here in the United States of America. I had hoped that we would return to normalcy tomorrow and my Facebook and Twitter feeds would cease to be populated by angry rhetoric. Unfortunately, regardless of who wins, I know that won’t be the case. The rhetoric will drag on for days as proponents of both candidates act like the entire universe has been saved or the entire universe is doomed. I don’t think the results will be that extreme and, whoever wins, I’ll just be happy that it’s over.

Even though I can’t vote for them, here are some nerdy rulers I wouldn’t mind seeing in the Oval Office.

#462 – Mentors

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on October 23, 2012 by scotthiga

Luke benefitted from his time with Obi-Wan.

Frodo benefitted from his time with Gandalf.

Harry benefitted from his time with Dumbledore.

Steve Rogers benefitted from his time with Abraham Erskine.

We may not know any wizards or Jedi but we all need someone who can mentor us and pass along his or her wisdom. I never had someone teach me how to use the Force but I have had plenty people show me the ropes in ministry. No one ever helped me become a Super Soldier but I’ve had people help me become a better husband, friend and pastor.

I got to spend time with someone like that yesterday. Read more »

#438 – Tolkien Week

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on September 19, 2012 by scotthiga

This week is Tolkien Week. I didn’t even know that Tolkien Week existed until Monday. The celebration of Tolkien Week began in 1978 and commemorates the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and his son, Christopher J.R. Tolkien. I only know Tolkien from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I also know that he was friends with C.S. Lewis and helped lead Lewis to Christ.

How awesome would it have been to sit and listen to Lewis and Tolkien discuss theology? Read more »
