#616 – Review: Man of Steel

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on June 17, 2013 by scotthiga

man-of-steel

Man of Steel finally made its way into theaters this past weekend and fans of boring super heroes everywhere rejoiced. On this blog I’ve done my fair share of piling on Superman. Plenty of you have let me know through the comments that I’m wrong about Superman and I just haven’t read the right comics or watched the right seasons of Smallville. To be fair I haven’t read that many Superman comics; I’ve always been a Marvel man. I’m no fan of Superman but, in spite of that, I thought Man of Steel was a great movie.

From the trailers I thought Man of Steel had a chance to be a good movie. Under the guidance of producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder, though, Man of Steel exceeded my expectations and made me more of a fan of Krypton’s last son. The movie didn’t waste too much time on Superman’s origins, the movie logically explained kryptonite and its effects on Superman and the movie had Superman punching dudes all over the place. Man of Steel had almost everything I wanted in a Superman movie and almost nothing I didn’t want.

Here are some thoughts I had while watching Man of Steel. I’ll do my best to keep things spoiler-free but, you’ll be happy to know, Man of Steel Superman knows how to fly, unlike Smallville Superman. Read more »

#615 – Flashback Review: The Fifth Element

The Fifth Element (1997) 1

I love watching and reviewing new movies. However, there are a lot of old nerdy movies that I love and want to review. Flashback Reviews will take a look at some of my favorite nerdy movies from the past.

The Fifth Element is one of my favorite science fiction movies ever. I saw it in the theater at least five times and listened to the soundtrack nonstop on my Discman. I actually remember seeing Bruce Willis on Letterman promoting a different movie while filming The Fifth Element. He had his blond hair and said he was sworn to secrecy about the project he was working on. I could have done without the blond hair but his portrayal of Corbin Dallas was awesome.

Here are some reflections from The Fifth Element. I won’t keep things spoiler-free because the movie came out 16 years ago. Read more »

#614 – Biblical Superman

Man of Steel finally opens this week. I haven’t been shy about sharing my disdain for Superman. I think he’s boring, he’s too powerful and his weakness is pieces of his home planet, which can apparently be found in abundance on Earth. That being said, I’m actually looking forward to Man of Steel. In spite of my best efforts the trailers have gotten me excited and I’m ready to see Zack Snyder’s take on Superman.

Since Superman is so completely overpowered, there isn’t one single Bible character that encompasses everything about him. So here are some different Bible characters that display one of Superman’s powers. Read more »

#610 – Nerdy Rules

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on June 7, 2013 by scotthiga

Yesterday I participated in our church’s annual golf tournament. I play golf about once a year, usually at this very same tournament. I’m not very good at golf and don’t know if I have the time or money to get much better. While I’m not that good at golf, I do know a lot of its rules and etiquette. Golf has a lot of rules and they are always changing. Golf isn’t alone in its numerous rules; some of our favorite nerdclinations are also ruled by rules.

#605 – Guardians of the Galaxy Update

Of all the Phase 2 movies in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, I am most looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy. I haven’t read any of the Guardians comics but the idea of an intergalactic peace keeping force sounds totally awesome, especially because one of its members is a talking, anthropomorphic raccoon. I love all of the Avengers but I can’t wait to take to the stars with Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora and Rocket Raccoon.

There have been some recent updates to Guardians of the Galaxy and I thought I’d run them down. Read more »

#596 – Star Trek Into Spoilers

I’ve already written a review for Star Trek Into Darkness. I loved the movie and I feel like that puts me in the minority of most hardcore Star Trek fans. A lot of my friends have seen STID and they really liked it. Unfortunately, though, none of them are really big Star Trek fans. I don’t really have anyone to nerd out with over STID and talk about everything I liked. Fortunately, there are plenty of big Star Trek fans who frequent The Christian Nerd and I would love to hear your thoughts.

Beneath the cut I have written lots of my thoughts about Star Trek Into Darkness. There are a lot of spoilers so you may want to sit this one out if you haven’t seen the movie yet. Read more »

#594 – Review: Star Trek Into Darkness

I loved Star Trek Into Darkness. Earlier this week I wrote about my concerns that a Star Trek movie wouldn’t be able to capture all of the heart and spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s universe. While STID didn’t fully capture Star Trek’s heart, it did show a lot more if it than I had anticipated. The movie was exciting, filled with tremendous action and had enough of Roddenberry’s vision to keep this long-time fan emotionally invested.

Below are some thoughts I had while watching Star Trek Into Darkness. I’ll do my best to keep things spoiler-free. Read more »

#589 – Who is Iron Man?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on May 9, 2013 by scotthiga

As I wrote in my review of Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr. is and has been absolutely perfect as Tony Stark. He made Iron Man and was the biggest draw for non-nerds in The Avengers. I would have seen every movie in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe whether or not Downey had been cast as Tony Stark. However, there are plenty of people who have no affinity for Marvel’s mightiest heroes and wouldn’t have had any interest in Iron Man or The Avengers without Downey’s involvement.

Those people may be disappointed, though, when they find out that Downey is no longer contractually obligated to play Iron Man. Read more »

#586 – Review: Iron Man 3

Iron-Man-3-Imax-poster

Marvel kicked off its cinematic universe five years ago with the release of the original Iron Man. It seems hard to believe that in the half decade since, Marvel has given us five more movies in that universe, capped off by last summer’s The Avengers. The last five years have been nerdvana for those of us who love to see our favorite comic book heroes on the silver screen. This past weekend Marvel kicked off Phase Two of its cinematic universe with the release of Iron Man 3.

I was elated when I heard that Robert Downey, Jr. had been cast as Tony Stark. I knew that he was perfect for the role and would create interest in Iron Man beyond just nerds. He anchored Phase One of Marvel’s cinematic universe and kicks off Phase Two with a bang. I loved Iron Man 3 and can’t wait to see it again.

Below are some thoughts I had while watching Iron Man 3. Following my own etiquette, I’ll do my best to keep things spoiler-free, or at least warn you if they’re coming. Read more »

#585 – Spoiler Etiquette

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on May 3, 2013 by scotthiga

Iron Man 3 comes out today and I won’t be able to see it until Sunday. I feel like this is a perfect time to discuss spoiler etiquette.

According to Wikipedia:

A spoiler is an element of a disseminated summary or description of any piece of fiction that reveals any plot elements, which threaten to give away important details concerning the turn of events of a dramatic episode.

Telling someone that Darth Vader is Luke’s father is a spoiler.

Telling someone that Spock dies at the end of The Wrath of Khan is a spoiler.

Telling someone that Jesus comes back to life is a spoiler.

No one gets upset over those spoilers, though. We all know that they happened unless you live under a giant, non-nerdy rock or were born yesterday.

But what about spoilers for the new season of Doctor Who? What about spoilers for the most recent book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series? What about spoilers for Iron Man 3?

We need some guidelines and etiquette for spoilers. Here they are. Read more »
