#517 – Sex, Violence and Video Games

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on January 22, 2013 by scotthiga

My office and home are filled with video games and video game memorabilia. I’m a sucker for special editions of games so I’ve got a statue of Altair from Assassin’s Creed, an artbook from Final Fantasy X-2 and Master Chief’s full-size helmet from Halo 3. I can say with complete certainty, though, that the collectible from Dead Island Riptide will never adorn my shelves.

A severed head and some bloody breasts are definitely conversation starters, but not necessarily a conversation I’d like to have. After announcing the bloody collectible, Dead Island Riptide’s publisher Deep Silver has also had some conversations I’m sure it would like to have avoided. Read more »

#335 – Avengers XXX

Someone’s making an Avengers porn.

What the crap?

I read that news yesterday and couldn’t help but shake my head. It shouldn’t be all that surprising. There are porn parodies of lots of different nerdclinations, including Star Wars. I suppose if people are excited about seeing the Avengers battle Loki and his secret army, then there are probably people excited to see the Avengers have sex with each other.

Thankfully I’m not one of those people. That has nothing to do with me, though, and everything to do with Jesus. Read more »

#316 – Biblical Prom Themes

My Junior Prom

This past weekend a number of our group’s high school students attended prom. In spite of my nerdiness, I actually went to prom my junior and senior years of high school and even had a date both years. The themes for prom are always something mildly romantic like “A Night in Paris” or “An Evening Beneath the Stars”.

With that in mind, here are some biblical prom themes. Read more »

#299 – Sex Talk: Part 4

We must be swift as the coursing river

With all the force of a great typhoon

With all the strength of a raging fire

Mysterious as the dark side of the moon

That’s the chorus from one of my favorite Disney songs, “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”, from Mulan. I will often begin singing that song out of nowhere because I love it so much. As far as its message about masculinity, though, it leaves something to be desired. Read more »

#293 – Sex Talk: Part 3

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on February 29, 2012 by scotthiga

We continued our sex series last night at our youth group. This week I had a friend come and share his testimony. He made some choices and decisions that fell outside of God’s intentions and boundaries for sex. It was extremely encouraging to hear his story and how God’s grace and redemption shone through even the darkest of moments.

I had my friend come and share because, as far as sex goes, my testimony is pretty bland. I didn’t have sex until I was married and neither did my wife. Our testimony is an example of God’s grace enabling us wait until marriage. I love sharing my testimony with our students but there are just some questions I can’t answer. Read more »

#289 – Sex Talk: Part 2

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on February 23, 2012 by scotthiga

A month ago I posted about the upcoming sex series for our youth group. For years February, with its amorous nature and association with Valentine’s Day, has been ground zero for youth group sex talks. While we’ve done it at different times in the past, this year our group is tackling the topic of sex this month.

We had our first discussion about sex this past Tuesday. I shared a short message about God’s intention and design that sex is for marriage. (Last week, in preparation for this week, I shared about God’s intention and design for marriage). After sharing the message we took questions from the students via anonymous text message. #266 – Sex Talk

For the majority of my life Valentine’s Day was nothing more than a reminder that I didn’t have a significant other to buy flowers and take out to dinner. I didn’t mind that much but it is nice to know I’ll never have to spend another Valentine’s Day alone.

Other than the reminder of my singleness, when I was in high school Valentine’s Day also meant the beginning of our sex series at youth group. All four years while I was in high school, February meant that instead of talking about Jesus and his parables we would talk about sex and its consequences.

Now that I’m a youth pastor I know the importance of talking about sex with our students. We don’t always have our sex series in February but it is coming up. Read more »
