#603 – Snapchat

Snapchat

Snapchat is one of the newest social media available to smart phone users. I haven’t jumped on the Snapchat wagon yet and don’t plan on it. My students, however, are very fond of it. Snapchat allows its users to quickly send pictures back and forth to each other; it’s basically a faster form of picture messaging.

One of Snapchat’s draws is the ability to choose how long the pictures sent can be accessed. If I send you a Snapchat I decide how long you can look at it, anywhere from one to 10 seconds. After the time allotted, the picture is deleted and forever disappears…kind of.

Obviously there are plenty of dangers inherent in Snapchat. It is way too easy to sext and send lewd pictures back and forth. Even if Snapchat is used for less nefarious purposes, though, it is still plenty dangerous. Read more »

#590 – Danger, Will Robinson!

lost-in-space-robot

I never really watched the television series Lost in Space. I think that SyFy played reruns when I was growing up but I was far more interested in the crew of the Enterprise than the crew of the Jupiter 2. Even though I never watched the show, I do know about the family’s robot protector and its catchphrase, “Danger, Will Robinson!”

It’s interesting that in the 1960s there was a piece of technology warning humans about impending danger. When we look at technology today, we realize that technology is the danger of which we need to be warned. Read more »

#587 – Twitter Archive

DOCTOR WHO 8mb

Over the past year I have really fallen in love with Doctor Who. I love the Doctor, I love the companions and I love all of their timey-wimey adventures. If I had a TARDIS I’d fly all through the time vortex, visiting some of the most significant moments in history. While none of us have a TARDIS, DeLorean or other time machine, we can visit our past like the Doctor or Marty McFly.

Twitter now allows each user to download his or her Twitter archive. You now have the opportunity to see every Tweet you’ve ever sent throughout your Twitter life. It’s a simply matter of logging into Twitter, going to settings and downloading the archive. Read more »

#583 – Unlimited?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on May 1, 2013 by scotthiga

I’ve seen the Sprint commercial above numerous times as I’ve been watching the NBA Playoffs. The commercial contends that Sprint’s unlimited data plan will help us maximize the human experience as we capture it and upload it with our iPhone 5.

The commercial tells us that “the miraculous is everywhere: in our homes, in our minds.”

The commercial tells us that there are a billion people uploading the human experience.

The commercial tells us that the iPhone 5 can capture the fullness of the human experience and we need to share it with everyone.

I think this commercial is trying to sell us a bill of goods. I have an iPhone with unlimited data and, more often than not, instead of maximizing my human experience it limits my human experience. Read more »

#573 – Facebook Birthdays

facebook-birthday

Yesterday was one of my best friend’s birthdays. A lot of adults see the term “best friend” as juvenile but I love it. I use the term “best friend” for two of my friends, my best friends.

They know it.

Alycia knows it.

Everyone else knows it.

Since he is my best friend I obviously knew that his birthday was coming. I got him a present and was planning on celebrating with him. I didn’t need Facebook to tell me that it was his birthday in order to wish him a happy birthday.

But, if I had needed Facebook to know it was his birthday, would my well wishes had been less sincere and heartfelt? Read more »

#548 – Social Media Consumer

Like anyone uses Bing.

Like anyone uses Bing.

I’ve been pretty bad at social media for the past few days. Short of tweeting links to my blog, I haven’t really done much sharing. I feel like I’ve just been a social media consumer.

I know plenty of people who are social media consumers. I have plenty of friends who are Twitter voyeurs, just following their favorite celebrities or news feeds. I like to be someone who brings something to my social networks, though, and not just links to my blog. I feel like a solicitor outside of Target when I’m only telling people to come to TheChristianNerd. I want to be better at social media. I want to bring more. Read more »

#543 – Victoria’s Secret

Victoria's Secret

I really had no idea underwear could be so expensive or complicated.

Until I got married I didn’t know that women’s undergarments could be so complicated. As a guy I have evolved from briefs, to boxers and now to boxer briefs. There have been small variations through that evolution but it’s pretty much the same concept.

Women’s underwear is not nearly as simple. Neither was ordering a shirt from Victoria’s Secret for Alycia before we got married. Read more »

#538 – No Phone

no_iphone_4

I know a number of people who gave up some amount of phone activity for Lent. Most gave up social media and even deleted apps and changed their home screen to avoid them. I did not give up my phone or social media for Lent but yesterday such a sacrifice was forced upon me.

I don’t have a lot of luck with cell phones.

Once I took my iPhone out of its case and then it fell onto the concrete while playing a game at church, shattering the screen.

Once I took a different iPhone in a waterproof case with me while snorkeling in Hawaii. I put the phone into my pocket and when the bottom hatch opened it ceased to be waterproof.

Then on Monday, while walking into our apartment, I dropped my phone in its shockproof case after which it didn’t turn back on. Read more »

#513 – Examining Culture

Endeavor-teaching

One of my favorite parts about my job is the opportunity I have to communicate to large groups of students every week. I love teaching about God’s word and connecting it to our lives.

I also really enjoy examining culture and how God is already engaging us through it. This blog focuses a lot on the cultural aspect but last night I had the opportunity to share that with our students as well.

If you’ve spent any amount of time with a teenager lately, then you know that they are a media-driven group. They ingest various forms of media all throughout the day. They love social media like Instagram and Snapchat but also consume vast amounts of traditional media like movies, music and television.

The problem with a lot of Christian teens, though, is that they don’t think about the media they ingest. They don’t think about the influence movies, music and television have on them. Every form of media attempts to communicate a message. If we don’t unpack what message they’re communicating, then we could end up blindly accepting it. Read more »

#424 – Social Media and Hawaii

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 30, 2012 by scotthiga

Thanks to social media I will be back in our 50th state two weeks from today.

Last week I entered AM 570’s contest to win a trip to Hawaii. AM 570 is our local Fox Sports Radio affiliate and I listen to it every day. I signed up for the contest, which involved getting as many people to click my personal link; the person with the most clicks won the trip to Hawaii. Read more »
